How do I manually add a reference?
You can manually enter publication details to EndNote to create a reference record.
Please Note: Enter details carefully and accurately to avoid errors in your Word document.
1. Click the New Reference icon. The reference template will open.
2. In the pop-up box the default reference type is Journal Article. From the Reference Type drop-down box click the arrow to select a reference format. EndNote will structure your references based on the type selected, so it is important to select the most appropriate type.
3. Insert reference components e.g. author, title, year, publisher. If unsure which fields to fill in refer to the SIT APA 7th edition referencing guide. Additional information or edits can be made at any time.
4. Save your new reference.
Important notes to consider when manually creating a reference
Individual Author/Editor |
Write the individual’s surname first, enter a comma, then the author’s first name or initials (e.g. Lewis, Philip or Jones, A. J.). For two or more initials leave a single space between initials. |
|
Corporate Author |
Write the full corporate author’s name followed by a comma (e.g. Ministry for the Environment,). Failure to add a comma will result in the entry being abbreviated (e.g. Ministry, F. T. E.). |
|
Multiple Authors/Editors |
Enter each author or editor on a new line by pressing enter. |
![]() |
Title | Capitalise the first word in the title and for a two-part title also capitalise the first word of the second part. Proper nouns in the title require the first letter to be capitalised (e.g. Two peoples, one land: The New Zealand wars). | ![]() |
Edition |
Enter the edition numerically not the number word (e.g. 3rd not third). |
|
Year and Date |
When referencing a webpage always include the month and date if provided along with the year. Write the year in the Year section and the month and date in the Last Update Date section. |
|
Punctuation |
Do not add extra punctuation or text styles to reference information (e.g. brackets or italics). EndNote automatically punctuates and formats in-text citations and references. |
