Common referencing errors in EndNote
Capital letters in the title
Is the title all in capital letters or the first letter of every word in the title capitalised? Check for capitals in the reference preview (located in the right panel).
Fix: 1. Click on the reference in the centre panel → 2. In the right panel select Edit → Scroll down to the title section and highlight the title.
Manually change the capital letters to lower case and save your changes OR 4. Select Edit from the drop-down Menu bar → 5. Click Change Case → 6. Select Sentence case (remember the first word in the title must be capitalised and for a two-part title the first word of the second part must also be capitalised) → Manually change any proper nouns in the title to have a capital letter → 7. Save your changes.
8. In the right panel select Summary to preview the corrections.
Corporate author error
An abbreviated corporate author (e.g. organisation’s name) means the corporate author has been incorrectly entered in EndNote. Check for an abbreviated corporate author in the reference preview (located in the right panel).
Fix: 1. Click on the reference in the centre panel → 2. In the right panel select Edit.
3. Scroll down to the author section, enter a comma at the end of the corporate author and save your changes.
4. In the right panel select Summary to preview the corrections.
URL instead of DOI
APA 7th edition requires a DOI for articles from online databases accessed via the Library’s MySIT page. However, references exported into EndNote from a database may have a URL instead of a DOI.
1. Fix: Edit the URL by clicking the reference in the centre panel → In the right panel select Edit → Scroll down to the URL details and delete it. Save your changes.
2. The SIT APA 7th edition reference guide states articles from an online database accessed via the SIT Library’s MySIT page should include the DOI. If no DOI is listed, end the reference after the page range.
DOI duplication
Occassionally an exported reference from a database duplicates part of the DOI (https://doi.org/).
1. Fix: Click the reference in the centre panel → In the right panel select Edit → Scroll down to the DOI details and delete https://doi.org/, leave the numbers. Save your changes.
2. In the right panel select Summary to preview the corrections.
