EndNote 20/21 Guide / APA Referencing Guide

This guide provides comprehensive instructions on the installation and use of the reference management software EndNote 20.

Which fields are required to create film, television & video references in EndNote?

Important instructions:

  • Capitalise the first word in the title and for a two-part title also capitalise the first word of the second part.  Proper nouns in the title require the first letter to be capitalised e.g. The lord of the rings: The fellowship of the ring.
  • Very specific steps must be taken in order for references in Word to include the bracketed position descriptors required by APA 7th for film and television, e.g. Jackson, P. (Director).  Enter the Surname first, double comma, intials, full stop, contributor role descriptor in brackets.  If there are multiple individuals with the same contributor role discriptor e.g. executive producers only use the discriptor on the last name.

  • When a television series spans multiple years, separate the years with an dash (e.g. 2005-2010).  If the series is still airing, replace the second year with the word present (e.g. 2015-present).
  • To specify a particular version (e.g. an extended edition) in the Medium field type Film, then type a semi-colon and any specific version information e.g. film; four-disc special extended ed. on DVD.

  • For films and television series there may be more that one production company, include all production companies in the reference.  Separate multiple production companies with a semicolon in the Distributor field e.g. WingNut Films; The Saul Zaentz Company.
