Library Welcome Guide: Loan Devices

This is your portal to information, resources and services to assist your studies.

Loan device service

SIT highly recommends purchasing your own laptop.  With your student ID card, you may be eligible for discounts at electronics stores and at the beginning of the semester the IT department have a sale of pre-owned SIT devices.

SIT provides access to computer labs at the Invercargill campus.  These labs are open 7:30am – 11pm, 7 days a week (subject to change during holiday periods).

SIT offers loan laptops for students who do not have access to a device capable of connecting to online classes and/or using Office 365.  Demand often exceeds supply, and a loan laptop may not be readily available at the time of your request.

Students may be eligible for a loan device while currently enrolled and attending SIT classes, on campus or by distance.  Loan laptops are issued for 1 - 3 months and while you can request a renewal it is not guaranteed.

To apply for a loan laptop, you must complete the request form. Access the form from the MySIT page → Select Forms from the left side menu → Select Devices from the list → Click Student Loan Device Form – Individual and complete the form.

You will be notified for collection from the SIT Library.  If you are a distance student, the laptop will be posted to you.  You MUST keep the box for ease of returning the loan laptop at the end of your course.

Use conditions

When loaning a SIT laptop you are agreeing to the following conditions:

  • No additional software will be installed on these devices.  Students requiring access to SIT software must use the same resources (labs or virtual desktops where available) as all other students.
  • The device remains the property of SIT.
  • The device may not be used or transferred to any person other than the assigned student.
  • The student may not tamper or alter any part of the settings or software of the device.
  • The student is to maintain the device in good condition throughout the duration of their loan.  This includes connecting the device to our network regularly to ensure it is kept updated.
  • It is the student's responsibility to insure the equipment against loss if required.  The student will be bound for the specified period of this contract in the event of permanent loss or irreparable damage of the equipment.
  • The student will be liable for the cost of any damage, other than normal wear and tear, caused by abuse or negligence.  The charge will be determined by the Chief Financial Officer of SIT but limited to the original cost of the equipment.
