Library Welcome Guide: Borrowing

This is your portal to information, resources and services to assist your studies.

The library catalogue is accessible from any device with an internet connection. 

Borrowing from SIT Library: What you need to know

To access the SIT Library’s catalogue first type in the following address https://my.sit.ac.nz.  Enter your SIT email address and password to open MySIT.

Access the library catalogue from the library's MySIT page, click on the Library tab in the top ribbon.

The library catalogue link is located below the hours for the library hours.

SIT uses SSO, Single Sign On.  Accessing the catalogue via the library's MySIT page automatically logs the user in.  If not automatically logged in, login via the top right-hand corner login icon.

Accessing My Portal:

The My Portal link enables access to your current loans, loan history, reservations, personal details and other options.

Access My Portal from the three lines in the top left-hand corner.

 

My Portal options:

Details Update your personal details e.g. change of address or phone number.
Loans  Current Loans

Your current loans are listed and may be renewed up to and including the day due back.  14 day loans can be renewed twice.  To renew, click the renew icon.

Export your current loans in to an APA formatted list.  Click the Export button and select APA.  A pop-up box will provide a list to copy.

Loans  Loan History

Access your loan history to view every item borrowed from the SIT Library.  

Export your loan history in to an APA formatted list.  Click the Export button and select APA.  A pop-up box will provide a list to copy.

Requests  Bookings

Bookings made at the library front counter for library (Invercargill campus) study rooms will be listed here.

Requests  Reservations

Reserved items will be listed here.  Edit or cancel the reservation as required by clicking on the relevant icon.

The catalogue has various search options: basic search, advanced search, E-Books and Journals & Magazines. 

 

To search the catalogue, select the type of search, type your keywords into the search bar and click go.  Select or ignore suggested terms from the predictive list. 

 

To refine your search use the filters in the left-hand side menu.  Helpful filters are published date which limits results to a specific date range e.g. 2015 to 2025, subject which limits results to a specific topic, and type which limits results to a specific type of resource e.g. book, e-book or journal.  Combine and use the filters that best suit your search.

 

 indicates an item is available,  indicates an item is on loan and  indicates an item is available at another branch.  Other branch items are available on request.  To locate items use the call number located on the right hand side of each item's details in the results list. 

 

E-Books have a clickable link that takes the user directly to the ebook. 

 

PDF documents provide the option to download or view the document online.

 

Click a title in the results list to expand the item's record.  The popup box provides publication details, clickable subject headings and a map locating the item on the library shelves.  You can also request or reserve the item from this popup box.

Do I reserve or request a library item?

Reserve - Give it to me later!

Request - Give it to me now!

Reserve a book that is currently on loan to another borrower.  When the item is returned you will receive an email advising you to pick it up. If you are a distance borrower the item will be posted to you.
Request a book that is currently available and on the shelf, library staff will retrieve it and place it on the hold shelf for you to collect.  If you are a distance borrower the item will be posted to you.

Requesting items from the library catalogue:

Tick the check box to the left of the title in the results list → Click the Select an Action box in the top right-hand corner → Click Add to My Catalogue.  Continue searching and adding titles to your catalogue in the same manner.

 

When searching is complete click the Select an Action box and click the View option. 

 

Your catalogue will list your added items.  Select the check boxes beside the required items → Click the Select an Action box → Select Request.

 

A form is generated listing requested items.  If required, enter an alternative postal address.  Your details are automatically generated, please check these.  Finally, click Save.

 

Reserving items on the library catalogue:

To reserve an item that is currently on loan, the process is the same as illustrated above except click Reserve instead of Request.

At the next screen choose First Available, then click the Save icon on the right hand side.

SIT Library endeavours to hold copies of all required textbooks, however, we are unable to loan for the duration of the course and students are advised to purchase their own copies where the text is set as 'Required'.  

Loan periods for library items are as follows:

Two Week Loan

A two week loan can be renewed a further two times unless another student has reserved it.

One Week Loan

No renewals.

3-Day Loan

Short term loan, no renewals.

Closed Reserve

A small collection of books housed at the circulation desk, items may be used in the library for an hour at a time (in high demand periods) and can be loaned overnight if the item is borrowed late afternoon.  The book must be returned by 9:00am the next day without exception.  Closed reserve items cannot be reserved or booked in advance.
