ClinicalKey Student Nursing: Bookshelf & its features

ClinicalKey Student Nursing is an interactive education platform providing access to a wide range of nursing content. Learn how to search ClinicalKey and use its study tools.

Bookshelf is an online e-textbook reader that allows you to add highlighting, notes and bookmarks to content as well as create flashcards.   It also allows you to share highlights with other ClinicalKey Student users.

Bookshelf and its features

To view a book in the bookshelf it must first be added. 

To add a book to the bookshelf click on the Add to Bookshelf icon either from the book's table of contents or on the search results page.

Launching Bookshelf

To access your bookshelf from the ClinicalKey homepage either click on the Quick Actions Launch Bookshelf button or the Bookshelf icon in the top right hand corner of the top ribbon.

Open any book saved to your bookshelf by clicking on the book cover.  To search your bookshelf use the search bar in the top right hand corner of the bookshelf.

To search within a book or view a book's details hover over the book cover and select either the View icon or Search icon.

Click on the Account Settings icon in the top right hand corner to change language or access help support.

Click on the  Reader Preferences icon in the top right hand corner to select display, highlighter and sharing preferences.

Change the display preferences including text size, font, mode, margin and line height for easy reading.

Select and name highlighter colours.  Click public to be able to share your highlighting with others.

To share highlighting, the highligher must be set to public.  Then copy share link and send.  

Please note: To see shared highlighting the book must first be added to your bookshelf.  It may take up to five minutes for shared highlights to show up.

Click on theStudy Tools icon in the top right hand corner to expand the workbook and use the annotation, bookmark and flashcard tools.

  1. Click and drag to select text.
  2. Right click and select highlighting colour.
  3. Highlights will be listed in the annotations section of the workbook.  Click on highlighted section to jump to that location in the book. 

  1. Hover over highlighting in annotations section of workbook. 
  2. ClickMore Options icon and select Add Note.
  3. Type note and click Save.
  4. Notes are visible below highlighting in the annotations section of the workbook. 

  1. Click Export to export a pdf of your highlighting and notes.
  2. Print or save the pdf.

Adding Bookmarks Creating Flashcards
  1. Click on the bookmarks tab in the workbook.
  2. To bookmark a page click the  Add Bookmark icon.

Create decks of flashcards with text and/or images from the book.

  1. Click on the flashcards tab in the workbook.
  2. Create a new deck by clicking on  Add Deck icon or select a deck you have already created.
  3. Copy and paste text from the book into a flashcard or type in a question, term etc. 
  4. To add an image from the book to your flashcard click on the  Image icon on either the front or back of the flashcard to view all images, figures and diagrams and select the item to add.  
  5. Once both front and back of the flashcard are completed click Save.
  6. To edit or delete a flashcard hover over the card and select either the Edit or Delete icon.
  7. To study your flashcards click on a deck and then click on Study.  A new window will open and you can work through your flashcards. 

Click on the  More Option icon in the top right hand corner and select Read Aloud.  The control bar will appear in the centre of the top ribbon. 

Click on the  cog icon in the Read Aloud control bar to adjust the read aloud settings.  These settings include reading speed, changing the voice and also reading the alternative text (this describes the appearance or function of an image on a page).
